Burglöwe (Lion Monument)

A 12th-century bronze statue and the emblem of Brunswick. Commissioned by Henry the Lion in 1166.

The Burglöwe on Burgplatz is one of the oldest surviving large bronze sculptures north of the Alps. Henry the Lion had it placed in front of his Dankwarderode Castle in 1166 as a symbol of his rule. The original now stands in the museum, while a copy cast in 1980 stands on Burgplatz.
